Reading Newsgroups using Internet Explorer

1. To read newsgroups, you will need to select the "Mail" function on your web browser. This will take you into Internet Explorer's "Outlook Express" mail and news program. Click on the mail icon.

You can also open Outlook Express directly from the desktop. If you have not used it before as a mail program, you may need to configure Outlook to send and receive email. Be sure to complete this configuration process before continuing Keep in mind that if multiple students will be using the computer you configure to read iEARN newsgroups, you will need to consider how to manage the e-mail addresses entered into the Preferences, so that messages are posted under the right e-mail address.

2. Next, you will need to add the iEARN news server in the "Accounts" section of Outlook Express. Under the "Tools" icon, Click on Accounts.

3. Within "Accounts" select the 'News' tab. Click 'New' to add a new News account. When prompted, enter "foro.iearn.org" as the server name, and "news.foro.iearn.org" as the server address. Check the box next to "Add server". Check "This server requires authentication" and enter your iEARN User Name and Password. When you are done, click "OK."

When you return to the main Outlook Express page, you should now see 'foro.iearn.org' listed along the menu of folders on the left column. Click once on 'foro.iearn.org'. As a shortcut to finding all of the iEARN newsgroups, type "iearn" in the field that reads "Display newsgroups containing."

Once all of the iEARN newsgroups appear, you can Subscribe to any newsgroup by highlighting it and clicking 'Subscribe' in the menu bar. Once you have subscribed to your iEARN newsgroups, they will appear underneath the 'iearn' heading in the left column. If you do not see them, click the triangle to the left of the icon, which should turn down a listing of the "iearn" newsgroups to which you are subscribed.
