Chapter Nine: iEARN Youth

iEARN is committed to encouraging Youth to get connected to make a difference in the World. We do this in many ways.

iEARN Youth develop and facilitate international projects
iEARN Youth take an active role in the running of iEARN in their own country. They introduce iEARN to schools, lead projects, help with fundraising and take part in the management of iEARN locally.
iEARN Youth hold their own Annual Youth Summit held concurrently with the iEARN International Conference.
iEARN Youth organize conferences on specific topics (example: the Natural Disaster Youth Summit)
iEARN Youth elect Local Youth Representatives in their country/center
iEARN Youth elect an International Youth Representative to represent their views on the iEARN Assembly

iEARN International Youth Representative (YR):

Every two years, a different iEARN youth member is elected by the youth to serve as the Youth Representative on the Assembly. Previous YRs have included:

Sebastijan Podgornik - iEARN-Slovenia (1998-2000)
Wileyda Cardona - iEARN-USA (2000-02)
Sarah Alam - iEARN-Pakistan (2002-04)
Ahmed Gamal - iEARN-Egypt (2004-06)
Mostafa Nejati - iEARN-Iran (2006-08)

What is a Youth Representative?

A Youth Representative is a youth chosen to represent the youth of his/her country and the youth of iEARN's international community.

A Youth Representative has a voice and a vote in the Assembly, iEARN's international decision-making body.

What are the Duties of a Youth Representative (YR)?

The YR should be active in the iEARN assembly discussion forums and the Youth Forum, and should vote on iEARN Assembly proposals.

The YR should represent iEARN youth in the Assembly and convey iEARN Youth concerns to iEARN Assembly.

The YR must be able to represent the iEARN Youth at the annual iEARN International Assembly, Conference and Youth Summit

The YR must inform the youth of iEARN about decisions and ideas of the iEARN assembly.

The YR will be expected to serve a period of 2 years, with no re-election. If the Youth Representative decides to leave his/her position before the end of his/her term, there will be a re-election. A temporary youth representative will be appointed by the Executive Council and approved by Assembly until the next elections take place.

The YR must present/have an action plan that he/she will try to carry out during acting as a youth representative. For an example, proposed by Mostafa Nejati in 2006, see: http://mostafa.awardspace.com/youthrep.htm

What are the Criteria for a Youth Representative?

The Youth Representative must represent the ideas, needs and opinions of the youth of his/her country and of all iEARN youth.

The YR must know how to read and write in English, in order to communicate well with most of the iEARN students.

The nominee must have some experience with iEARN projects. The nominee should have at least one-year experience with iEARN projects. So that he/she can give opinions and help with different issues related to youth participation.

The YR must work with the LYRs.

The YR should be an active student in School or University, 14-24 years old.

What are the Criteria and Process for Nominating a Youth Representative?

IEARNers of all ages are allowed to nominate.

The person who nominates must send a 1-2 paragraph description of the youth he/she is nominating.

The paragraphs must discuss reasons why you are nominating the individual. Who they are? What they have done?

Also share with us the person's name, age, email, telephone number, or any other methods by which they can be contacted.

Please post/send your nominations to youthsummit@us.iearn.org, with the name of the nominee you wish you to nominate, or to the youth summit forum.

The nomination process will last 60 days. The nominations usually take place, beginning of February to the end of March. We allow a 2 month period since some schools are on vacation during this time. The nomination process will then be followed by the elections.

After the nominations, a ballot will be posted with the nominees' names.

After this, iEARNers can vote for the candidates that they prefer.

NB. In January 2006, the process for nominations and voting for YR were developed by Sarah Alam and Nuria Peguero in consultation with the Executive Council and Assembly.

What are the Criteria and Process for Voting?

Elections: usually take place every other year during the month of March.

The Youth Representative will be expected to serve a period of two years.

IEARNers 10-25 years of age are allowed to vote

Voters must vote and must include their name, country, and their title (teacher, student)

In order for your vote to be accepted you must send your vote to
the current Youth Representative.

Only one vote per person is permitted.

You must submit your vote no later than the last day of March.

The iEARN Youth Representative and Youth Coordinating Team will decide on how to perform the elections and how to consider the elections winner, and will announce the decision for public attention prior to the elections

How is the Voting Process Carried Out?

Votes will be put into a ballot. The votes will then be selected under an election process suggested by the Youth Representative and Youth Coordinating Team, and approved by iEARN Executive Council (EC).

The voting will be supervised by the previous Youth Representative. If the previous youth representative cannot supervise the votes, the voting will be supervised by iEARN's Executive Council.

A Youth Representative is declared winner if he/she received votes that reflect iEARN's diversity. This means that votes must not only come from the nominee's country, but also from other participating iEARN countries.
