The following are highlights of CIVICS activities from participating countries

 

EGYPT CIVICS participants in Egypt are participating in the Laws of Life project and the YouthCaN Conference at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where the have participated in a video-conference workshop presentation with students and teachers who were presenting the workshop from the Ministry of Education in Egypt.

 

INDIA. CIVICS has resulted in iEARN-India being established as an NGO, outreach to scores of schools, and the reforestation of 100 acres of government land. Another direct outcome of CIVICS is that a school in India has taken the lead in publishing a collection of essays written for the Laws of Life project from countries in the CIVICS project.

 

JORDAN. A Jordanese CIVICS exchange educator, after attending the iEARN Regional Conference in Cairo, co-organized a workshop for English Language teachers in Jordan in 2001. The iEARN Child Labour Project was highlighted as an appropriate project for classrooms in Jordan. iEARN is working with Schools Online toestablish 12 Internet Learning Centers in Jordan this year in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

LEBANON. In Lebanon, Mr. Abdo Yammine, chief supervisor of Technology at the Ministry of Education, pledged support and expressed his will to introduce CIVICS collaborative projects within the Ministry's plan to distribute 300 computers to public schools.After participating in the YouthCaN Conference, iEARN Lebanon is planning to organize a YouthCaN in Lebanon for teachers and students from Mediterranean countries. This year, IEARN-Lebanon is being established as an independent NGO in Lebanon.

 

MOROCCO. Schools in Morocco have been active in iEARN since 1999. Mr. Mourad Benali, iEARN-Morocco Coordinator, has overseen the submission of Arabic essays for the Laws of Life essay project and Arabic translation for iEARN project description book and other materials. IEARN-Morocco is excited about joining CIVICS and will establish a regional coordination center responsible for future implementation of both the Laws of Life essay project and CIVICS.

 

PAKISTAN. In Pakistan, forty schools have joined iEARN and have been very actively participating in the following collaborative projects: Reforming Practices and Traditions( started by CIVICS schools), The Local Birds Project (both facilitated by teachers from Pakistan), Laws of Life, Child Labor, Lewin, Fight Against Drugs, and Do We have a Spare Planet.iEARN Pakistan started another new project this year, Studying History in the Search of Truth, and is also producing a publication of the student writing from the CIVICS project.

 

SRI LANKA. After the initial training workshop exchange in Sri Lanka in the Spring of 2000, there are now nine iEARN member schools in Sri Lanka. IEARN-Sri Lanka has formed a coordinating team made of three educators: Ms. Lakshmi Attaygalle (English Teacher at Royal College in Colombo) and Mr. Nandasiri Wanninayaka (The Horizon School, Anuradhapura).

 

UNITED STATES. In 2000, iEARN sent six U.S. Educator/Trainer to India, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to give CIVICS workshops and and hosted 21 educators from these countries for two week curricula development training and cultural /educational exchange with a host school and community. In May 2000, 12 of these educators attended a workshop and YouthCan in New York City.In 2001, five additional educators from Egypt and Pakistan traveled to the United States to attend Youth Can in New York City, where students from Egypt did a video conference presentation from the Ministry of Education in Egypt, and then to host schools in MI, NC, OH,WA,and WI for a two week exchanges.

Students at Sunnyside School in Pullman, Washington made made a comfort quilt for a visiting CIVICS teacher from Pakistan to take to the Pediatric Center at a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.

iEARN-Pakistan hosted CIVICS workshops in Islamabad and Karachi in Spring 2002.

In November 2000, iEARN-Egypt hosted the first CIVICS Regional Meeting in Cairo.

In January 2002, iEARN-Lebanon conducted a CIVICS workshop for 24 teachers in Beirut.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo celebrated iEARN Egypt in a special CIVICS program awards ceremony this past November.
